Save Money on Your Home

Owning a home is expensive business. It’s not just the purchasing of a home but all the tiny things that come along with it like buying a refrigerator, heating & cooling, and all the bills. There are ways you can save money at home by taking just a few small steps.

One way you can save money is via your energy bill. It turns out there are plenty of appliances that are considered “energy vampires” (aka they silently suck up energy) and they can cost up to $100 extra a year. It’s easy to remedy, however. All you need to do is unplug phone chargers, turn off appliances not in use and plug TVs, etc. Into power strips so they can be easily turned off when not in use. Voila! You now have an extra hundred dollars or so.

Another easy step you can take to save money at home is to lower the temperature on your water heater. The ideal temperature should be between 130 and 140 degrees Fahrenheit. Keeping it here will save money, energy, and enable you to avoid any overly hot showers.

Every year $200 to $400 is wasted on air leaks in the home that come from drafty windows and doors. That’s a LOT of money! You can fix the issue by applying weatherstripping or by laying a draft snake against windows & doors.

Change the lights! Replace the bulbs in the lights you use most often with LED bulbs. LED bulbs use up to 80% less energy than other light bulbs which will save money. Also important? Turning off the lights when you leave the room! You may think leaving a light on here or there isn’t a big deal, but it adds up in the long run. Turning off the lights is one of the easiest ways to make your home more affordable that there is.

One odd way you can save money is by keeping your refrigerator and freezer as full as possible. It sounds strange but when you open your fridge, air escapes. The fuller your refrigerator/freezer is the shorter the time it takes your appliance to bring the temperature back down once the door is closed. Since refrigerators are one of the most, if not the most, expensive household appliance to run, it’s good to save energy & money where you can. Don’t have enough food to stock your fridge? You can use empty milk jugs filled with water to take up space.

Another way you’re losing money at home is by not cleaning your dryer vents. Yep, clogged dryer vents make it harder for your dryer to work which will cost you more. Clearing out your lint trap after each use will help your vents stay clear. Making sure you dryer vents are clean can save you up to $24 a month. And speaking of laundry, washing your clothes in cold water will cut costs as well. 90% of the energy your washing machine uses goes toward heating the water, so this simple switch will save you.

Taking small steps like these will help you keep costs down and keep your home running smoothly. Over time these steps will put money back in your pocket which is definitely a good thing!
