As fall is now in full swing, we wanted to share a few tips for keeping your dryer running safely in cooler weather. While dryer fires are a possibility year-round, the risks increase during cooler months due to bulkier clothing and bedding increasing the amount of lint that clogs up vents and lint traps. You want to be sure to keep a closer eye on things this fall (and winter) season.
One of the most important things you can do this fall is hang up heavier clothing and items to dry instead of putting them into the dryer. That cozy comforter and that cable knit sweater? They’ll produce way more lint than your summer sheets and tees contributing greatly to a build-up of lint and debris.
Also, only use your dryer for 30-40 minutes a load (if your laundry is taking longer to dry than that, you need to give us a call as your vents likely need to be cleaned as soon as possible). Using the dryer for shorter amounts of time allows air to better circulate and enables there to be less lint build-up in general. Go with smaller laundry loads if you need to!
One of the most important things to remember is to always, always stay home while your dryer is running. If your dryer is acting up, being nearby could enable you to stop something negative before it starts. In addition, be sure to keep a fire extinguisher near your dryer and clean in and around the lint trap after every use.
And be sure to keep the ventilation opening on the outside of the house capped. Not only will this allow hot air and lint/debris to blow out, but it’ll also keep out critters trying to next in the warm vents.
