Dryer sheets can contain all sorts of chemicals that may not be healthy for you, and they aren’t great for the environment either. If you’re ready to ditch the dryer sheets, you’ll need to find an alternative so your laundry doesn’t come out of the dryer all staticky. The alternatives below are all great and will cause much less harm to the environment and you!
If you aren’t ready to toss dryer sheets entirely, you can try making your own. Not only will this method save you money, but it won’t make your clothes smell like chemicals either. All you need are cloth scraps (such as cut up old tees), vinegar, and your favorite essential oil. Place the scraps in a jar with enough vinegar to dampen them (but not soak!), then put in a few drops of essential oil. When you want to use one, wring it out then toss it into the dryer.
And speaking of vinegar, you can use just it to soften your clothes. How? You just need to add a bit of vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser. If you’re concerned about your clothes smelling like vinegar, you can also add some essential oil.
Aluminum foil is another kitchen essential that works as well. Though aluminum foil won’t actually soften your clothes, it will dissipate static. All you have to do is use 3-4 square feet of aluminum foil, crumple it up into a tight ball, and throw it in the dryer!
Finally, there’s wool balls. You’ve probably heard about these before, as they perform wonders in the dryer. Not only do these soften your clothing, but they also even out heat flow and decrease the time it takes to dry! These balls are quite easy to find online and elsewhere too.
Save yourself some money, potential allergic reactions to chemicals, and the environment by ditching the dryer sheets and using an alternative. You’ll be glad you did!
