Happy National Home Improvement Month!

Did you know that May is National Home Improvement Month? Since 2002, May has been known as National Home Improvement Month. The National Association of the Remodeling Industry (NARI), with the backing of the U.S. Congress, created the initiative to celebrate home improvement and make it easier for homeowners to find experts to help them with their home transformations. With spring finally here and summer around the corner, it’s the perfect month to get around to any home improvement projects you may have been putting off!

While bathroom and kitchen projects tend to be the most popular home improvement projects, there are a handful of things you should be sure to check on during the month of May to make sure your home not only looks great, but is safe.

 Evaluate your doors and windows. When it comes to your doors, check to see if you can see light coming through any of the edges, whether the door is hard to close or lock or weather the wood of the door is warped. For windows, if you feel air leaking in or out, have trouble opening or closing, or there’s condensation between glass panes, it’s time to replace them. When doors and windows aren’t working properly to keep outside air out and inside air in, it can raise your energy bills.

 Check the siding of your home. Did you know that algae can grow on dirty siding? Definitely not a look you want for your home! Scrub or pressure-wash your siding to keep it clean (but note if you’re using pressure-washing to avoid windows and screens). Check siding for any insect damage, warping or peeling paint while you’re cleaning and replace as needed to keep your home looking its best.

 Check the gutters. It’s important to make sure that your gutters aren’t clogged, are properly attached and properly positioned for drainage. If not, you run the risk of water damage to your home.

 Take a look at your roof. Your roof is an essential part of your home and if there’s damage to it such as broken shingles or loose roofing tiles, there may be a new roof in your future. So grab a ladder and give your roof a good once-over.

 Have your dryer vents cleaned. There’s no better way to improve your home than by making sure your dryer vents are cleaned out and safe from any critters or potential fire hazards!
